Spring is here and what better way to enjoy the good weather than to be out in your backyard constructing things with your DIY tools? Here are some projects which are simple to execute but produce amazing results that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

1.

Nest boxes for your yard

: Birdlife Australia has detailed guidelines on the correct dimensions of boxes for various birds and how to instal them correctly. This includes designs to shield the entrance hole from common species and encourage the endangered ones to nest. Only the basic tools like drill, hammer, saw, screwdriver and sandpaper are required.

Bird feeders are more common, but Birdlife Australia discourages artificial feeding since it leads to diseases and malnutrition. Instead, they recommend making your garden a natural habitat for the birds.

2.

Planters for your garden

: If you have a small garden, having a tiered or pyramid planter can help you utilise the space more efficiently. Choose a spot which gets adequate sunlight. These are perfect for kitchen herbs or leafy greens and will deliver fresh, edible results. ACQ treated pine sleepers form the base of the planter and you will need a circular saw, drill and bugle screws.

3.

Unique garden seats

: Instead of buying outdoor furniture, why not make it yourself? Unique seats are easy to execute and inexpensive too. The frame is made with timber batten and fence pickets are fixed on to the frame to make decorative seats and even small tables. Tools like handsaw, power drill, caulking gun, carpenter s square etc. are required for this project.

4.

Rustic letterboxes

: Letterboxes are one area where the Australian DIY spirit is displayed in abundance. Materials and style can be personalised for a quirky or sophisticated appearance. Remember that Australia Post delivers only to letterboxes in specific approved sizes, which are placed on your property boundaries. A few basic tools like a jigsaw, drill and sandpaper should be sufficient for a basic letterbox.

A word of caution

DIY tools are a major cause of accidents with a large number of emergency calls per week. The NSW Ambulance Service paramedics attend at least 2 or 3 cases every week, many of them serious injuries involving severed fingers. Always be extremely careful when using power tools and use them only for their intended purpose. Keep children away and concentrate fully on the task at hand.

DIY projects are not only fun, but budget-friendly too. With a few basic DIY tools and a never-say-die spirit, you can tackle most home improvement projects.
